Helmholtz-Coils are especially designed to generate precisely defined magnetic fields from DC to the upper end of the audio frequency range and beyond. The generated fields are in a strongly linear relation to the coil current. The field- strength can be calculated exactly by analytical (or numerical) methods, based on the coils’ geometry, the number of turns and the coil current.
Therefore Helmholtz-Coils are ideally suited for the calibration of magnetic field probes or sensors.
Typical applications are magnetic immunity testing according to automotive standards or MIL-461F. When generating magnetic fields with Helmholtz coils the coil current is directly proportional to the magnetic field strength.
Magnetic Field Distrubance Tests
The tests against magnetic field disturbances can be classified in two categories:
· DC testing: in this case the field doesn´t change with the frequency. In DC testing the maximum fields are in the order of 3000-4000 A/m. In DC testing you must use dedicated radiating loops or Helmholtz coils (FESP 5133-1330 can be only used in DC testing). In DC Testing you need a radiating loop or an Helmholtz coil, DC power supply and Hall sensor.
· AC testing: in this case the field changes with the frequency.
In AC testing the maximum fields are in the order of ~1000 A/m.
In AC testing you must use dedicated radiating loops or Helmholtz coils (FESP 5132, HHS 5206-16 for example). In AC testing you need a radiating loop or an Helmholtz coil, RF amplifier LFPA 9733, SHUNT, compensation network NFCN 9734 and monitoring loops.
To determine which coils are required, the following information must be provide the sizes of the device under test (DuT).
For DC testing: maximum field to be reached (3000 A/m, 4000 A/m?).
For AC testing the customer must check the attached document and inform us about the normative that they are using. Each normative gives a well defined field as a function of the frequency. When we will have these information, we can design a system.
The hall probe HS 5136 can be used to measure magnetic field strengths for immunity tests according to MIL STD 461 and various automotive standards. It measures static and dynamic magnetic fields with a field strength up to 8000 A/m. The HS 5136 is a transverse probe, i.e. the magnetic flux lines must be orthogonal to the longitudinal probe axis and orthogonal to the surface of the hall-element to obtain the maximum reading.

Helmholtz-Coils are especially designed to generate precisely defined magnetic fields from DC to the upper end of the audio frequency range and beyond. The generated fields are in a strongly linear relation to the coil current. The fieldstrength can be calculated exactly by analytical (or numerical) methods, based on the coils’ geometry, the number of turns and the coil current. Therefore the HHS 5206-132 is ideally suited for the calibration of magnetic field probes or sensors. Typical applications are magnetic immunity testing according to automotive standards or MIL-461F. When generating magnetic fields with Helmholtz coils the coil current is directly proportional to the magnetic field strength. The calibration of the magnetic field is finally traceable to a current measurement (or to a voltage drop at a known resistor). The Helmholtz Coil itself is usually considered as primary standard due to the easily calculable relation between current and field strength. If this relation should be controlled, a loop sensor or monitoring loop can be used to determine the actual field strength.

RECOMMENDED ACCESORIES
NFCN 9731-100 Matching Network
The primary function of the compensation network NFCN 9731-100 is to provide a serial compensation of the inductance of i.e. the HHS 5230-100 at operation frequencies of 16.666 Hz, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 150 Hz und 180 Hz. These operation frequencies are stipulated by SAE J551 – 17 (Vehicle Electromagnetic Immunity – Power Line Magnetic Fields). The compensation capacitor reduces th e overall impedance of the series circuit consisting of the Helmholtz coil HHS 5230-100 and the compensation network NFCN 9731-100 at the applied operating frequency and allows currents up to 8 Arms at a generator voltage of less than 60 Vrms.
